THIS JOURNEY ISN’T LINEAR

A journey worth being on.

THIS JOURNEY ISN’T LINEAR is a visual representation of my relationship with my mental health. This representation changes depending on which path the viewer takes when looking at each image.

From the path of “outside-in”, we start with a rhetorical question, one that my anxiety constantly cycles through my mind during the day. Once we start looking deeper, one can see the crazy abstract messiness that’s inside of me, the depression I’m scared I can’t control. Both of these are things that I constantly think about during panic attacks or depressive episodes, which are detrimental to my mental health.

However, from the path of “inside-out”, we start with the beauty of a light painting photograph, a representation of my passion for photography. Once we start zooming out, one can see the strong square structure of the image and text, a representation of my job as a civil engineer. Both photography and engineering are tools I use to combat anxiety and depression, and to improve my mental health.

When I started going to therapy in 2020, I assumed I would go until I was “fixed” or “cured”. It took me a long time to realize that improving my mental health wasn’t something I could “complete”, it was something that will be ongoing, and not always in a good way. THIS JOURNEY ISN’T LINEAR, but it's a journey worth being on.

THIS JOURNEY ISN’T LINEAR consists of 20 pieces captured between 2020-2022. The project was also featured as a solo artist talk at Praxis Gallery (Minneapolis, MN) in the spring of 2022.
